If you’re like so many of America’s professionals in today’s competitive business world – or even if you just spend a lot of time on the computer at home – you’ll find significant portions of your daily routine devoted to staring at those glowing machines we call computer monitors. With as much time as you spend, you’ll want to make sure that time is spent well – and preferably without doing permanent damage to your eyes.
If so, you’ll want to invest some money in getting a good, high quality computer monitor. While the big, boxy CRT computer monitors are the cheapest – rarely more than forty or fifty dollars new – the thin, flat screen LCD computer monitors are generally the highest quality. They’re lightweight and portable, aesthetically pleasing, and lack the flickering ray trace technology CRTs use, making them easier on the human eye. Whether you get a CRT or an LCD, make sure you get something big. Small objects are harder for the human eye to focus on, making you have to lean in closer to see right. The closer your eyes are to your computer monitor, the more you risk eye strain or other forms of ocular damage. A larger screen lets you sit back comfortably and keep your eyes relaxed. Another consideration is power usage. In this case, the LCD computer monitors win hands down. An LCD monitor uses only a third of a CRT of equivalent size, and is brighter – which also makes it easier on the human eyes when stared at for long periods of time. |
